Topic Overview:
In order for industrial designers and product developers to be able to integrate sustainability into their design practices they need to be able to access tools, both practical and theoretical. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a valuable method of assessing the whole of life impacts of a product, yet this is often inaccessible to designs as it is time and cost inhibitory. So what tools can designers access to engage in sustainable design?
This seminar will present a range of tools that designers can access in order to integrate sustainability into their design practices. These include; online assessment tools such as Greenfly, life cycle thinking processes, decision making tools and design strategies. This presentation will reflect on common frustrations and hurdles expressed by designers whilst attempting to engage with eco design.
